VI Cycling Federation Holds First Race of Season; Dizon-Bumann Takes First Place

On Sunday morning, the Virgin Islands Cycling Federation held its first race of the 2021 season.  Twenty-five cyclists participated in the Divi-to-Ha’ Penny Individual Time Trial, which was held on St. Croix’s South Shore Road.  Newcomers and veterans alike completed the 9-mile course in “the race of truth,” where winning depends on each rider’s strength and endurance and not on the help and support of teammates or other riders as in a road race.

The winner of the 2020 race, Danielky Cedeño, traded places in Sunday’s event with Mikey Dizon-Bumann, who finished 10 seconds behind Cedeño last year.  This time, Dizon-Bumann finished 13 seconds ahead of Cedeño and crossed the line in 21:34. Cedeño was second in 21:47, while VI Cycling Federation President David Morales was third in 22:40.

In the Expert category, Jerry Remie was the fastest in a time of 24:34.  More than a minute later, Ralph Bartlett was the second-place winner, and third place went to Miguel Cruz.

The large Sport group was led by newcomer Drew Stoken in a time of 26:22. Veteran triathlete John Hourihan was second and Alvin Thomas was third.

In tribute to Monday’s International Women’s Day, three female cyclists also showed their strength and endurance. Catherine Seguin took the gold in a time of 27:06; Laverne Fredericksen was second, and Judy Gario was third.

The next race, a two-person time trial, will be held at 7 a.m., Sunday, March 21.  The course will go from Ha’ Penny to the Divi Carina Bay Hotel and back.
