Sylvester Fontenelle Dies in North Carolina

Sylvester Fontenelle Sr.

On Oct. 5, Sylvester Fontenelle, known as “Gordon” to his friends, died in Durham, N.C. He was 78 years old.

Sylvester and his wife Teresa reside on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He and his wife were visiting their children and grandchildren in Durham, N.C., prior to his death.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Teresa “Grace” Fontenelle; daughters: Catalina Fontenelle-Romain, Judith Fontenelle, Lydia Fontenelle and Leona Fontenelle; sons: Albert Fontenelle, Ivan Fontenelle, Pius Fontenelle and Sylvester Fontenelle Jr.; granddaughters: Nicole Romain, Marquita Fontenelle, Nikki Romain, Nikkiva Romain and Mia Fontenelle; grandsons: David Fontenelle, William Fontenelle, Pius Fontenelle Jr., Qwinton Fontenelle and Tahj Fontenelle; and great-granddaughter, Kamiya Pritchard.

He will be fondly remembered by daughters-in-law: Dawn Fontenelle, Wincent Fontenelle and Tammy Fontenelle; and son-in-law, Irvin Romain.
He is also survived by the Eugene, Jeffrey and Martin families, in Martinique, Vieux Fort, Pierrot and Castries, St. Lucia; the Fontelio family in Canada, Vieux Fort and Castries, St. Lucia.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Marie Therese Fontelio of Castries, St. Lucia; and father, Elkin Joseph of Newham, Essex, England.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2438 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713. The viewing is scheduled 30 minutes prior to the memorial service.
Interment will follow at Beechwood Cemetery, 3300 Fayetteville St., Durham, NC 27707.

A repast will follow after the graveside service at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2438 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713.
