Two Officers Wounded, Suspect Killed

Two officers were wounded Saturday night and a suspect was killed in a shootout in Estate Contant near the car wash, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The officers were patrolling in the area where 22-year-old Jose Fuentes was killed Friday, May 25. According to the police, Fuentes was standing near the car wash Friday night when at least one person and possibly more fired multiple shots at him. He died later that night at the Roy Schneider Regional Medical Center.

At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, police were patrolling the area, according to VIPD spokesperson Melody Rames, when they saw several men loitering near the car wash. As police approached the group opened fired. In the ensuing shoot out one suspect was killed and two officers were wounded.

Police have not yet released the name of the dead man, but said he is well known to police and was recently arrested on felony charges. The names of the officers were not released.

A second suspect was detained for questioning by police.

St. Thomas/St. John Police Chief Darren Foy cautioned officers to be on heightened alert in light of these shootings.
