Chief District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis on Wednesday sentenced Kalomi Kambui, 41, of St. Croix to 18 months in prison for attempted possession of a controlled substance, acting U.S. Attorney Joycelyn Hewlett announced.
Lewis also sentenced Kambui to three years of supervised release and ordered her to pay a fine of $500 and a special assessment of $100.
Kambui pleaded guilty on Sept. 20 to attempted possession of a controlled substance. According to documents filed in court, on June 12, 2013, while she was employed as a corrections officer at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility, Kambui accepted what she believed to be ecstasy pills, along with payment, for the purpose of delivering the pills to an inmate inside Golden Grove.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alphonso G. Andrews Jr.
