DPNR’S Historic Recovery Program Awards $1.9 M in Grants

The Office of Disaster Recovery – United States Virgin Islands

Commissioner Jean-Pierre L. Oriol of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources has announced the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office’s (VISHPO) first round of historic recovery awards for qualified 2017 hurricanes Irma and Maria-damaged National Register Historic Sites in the territory.

Funding for this reimbursement grant was provided by the United States Department of Interior National Park Service’s Emergency Supplemental Historic Preservation Fund.  See first-round grant recipients listed below.

  1. Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church (Roof and Exterior Repairs)  $200,000.00
  2. Emmaus Moravian Manse, Coral Bay (Roof Repairs) $200,000.00
  3. Lord God of Sabaoth Episcopal Church (Exterior Repairs) $200,000.00
  4. Zora’s of St. Thomas Inc., Norre Gade 34 (Roof and Exterior Repairs)  $200,000.00
  5. Catherineberg 8D LLC, Catherineberg 8D (Exterior Repairs) $165,500.00
  6. Mango Works LLC, Wimmelskafts Gade 13 (Roof and Exterior Repairs) $117,000.00
  7. The Nature Conservancy, Estate Little Princess (Roof and Exterior Repair) $90,200.70
  8. St. Thomas Historical Trust (Hassel Island Dock Repairs) $48,123.00
  9. St. Thomas Historical Trust (Hassel Is. Garrison House Repairs) $17, 640.00
  10. Meeting the Needs of Our Community (MTOC) (Roof and Exterior Repairs) $40,560.00
  11. Frederick D. Dorsch Cultural Activities Center (Exterior Repairs)  $51,416.07
  12. ATELIERS 6 LLC, Snegle Gade 6 (Roof and Exterior Repairs)  24,023.77
  13. MJB Caribbean Ventures Inc. Dronningens Gade 25 (Roof and Exterior Repairs) $29, 385.10
  14. R. M. Brady, Snegle Gade 2B and 3 (Roof and Exterior Repairs)  $24, 110.20
  15. A. Canton, Norre Gade 12A (Historic Wall and Fence Rebuilt) 3,860.00
  16. Memorial Moravian Church (Belfry Roof Repairs) 7,579.00
  17. Government House, Kongens Gade 21-22 (Exterior and Interior Repairs) $547,581.75

The Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office extends special thanks to the Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office, the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority’s Enterprise Zone Commission, Office of Disaster Recovery, and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands for their continued assistance with the Historic Recovery Program.

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands provided a grant to allow senior citizens to receive technical assistance with their step 2 applications from partner non-profit agencies.

“We thank these organizations for their role played with the V.I. Historic Building Disaster Recovery Program. DPNR remains committed to working with the community, non-profit organizations and agencies to restore and preserve our historic towns, sites and cultural resources,” said DPNR Commissioner Oriol.

The second round of grant recipients will be announced by mid-February 2024.
