Bill No. 34-0238 — An Act amending Title 17, Virgin Islands Code, chapter 5, section 41(c), relating to courses of study in public schools to require that the Virgin Islands and Caribbean history be taught specifically in kindergarten through 12th grade and for other purposes

BLOCK II

11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Bill No. 34-0236 — An Act amending Title 17, Virgin Islands Code, chapter 15, section 190dd, extending the eligibility for the Virgin Islands Higher Education Scholarship Program to part time students.

The committee will receive testimony concerning the critical issues with respect to the current status of our schools, including but not limited to learning loss prevention, after-school programs, curriculum plans, the school bus transportation crisis, delays in the installation of kitchen equipment, insufficient school supplies, lack of running water, school safety crisis and hazardous safety conditions, shortage of school nurses and medical supplies, as well as after school program plans, interscholastic/sports

Bill No. 34-0272 — An Act amending Title 3, Virgin Islands Code, chapter 16, section 274 to empower the executive director of the Taxicab Commission to hire the necessary staff to operate and manage the Taxicab Commission office.

The committee will receive testimony on the operations of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority to include but not limited to enabling law and jurisdiction, current agency challenges and plan of action to resolve challenges.

The committee will continue discussions on historic preservation as it pertains to Bill Draft Request 21-0222, economic development and public safety within downtown areas. This initiative seeks to modify some preservation restrictions on downtown properties in the U.S. Virgin Islands and allow for them to be rebuilt or renovated with the same or similar façade.
