Beginning Monday, Jan. 13, and continuing through mid-April, a 10-person crew from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC), based in Frederick, Md., will be cleaning, inspecting, repairing and painting approximately 25,000 square feet of the exterior walls of Fort Christiansvaern. All of the fort’s exterior walls, including those of the courtyard, will receive this treatment. The team is using a mineral silicate product and traditional limewash treatments that are appropriate for the historic masonry walls.
This project is supported with funds associated with the recovery efforts from hurricanes Irma and Maria. In order to ensure the safety of the park’s visitors, during this project portions of the fort may be temporarily closed. However, the National Park Service will make every effort to keep as much of the fort open and available for tours as possible.
The Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) is dedicated to the safe preservation and maintenance of national parks or partner facilities by demonstrating outstanding leadership, delivering quality preservation services, and developing educational courses that fulfill the competency requirements of service employees in the career fields of historic preservation skills, risk management, maintenance and planning, design and construction.
