Holiday Drowning: Father Dies at Magens Bay

A holiday father-son activity ended in tragedy Wednesday, the Fourth of July, when 40-year-old Ariel Ashby drowned at Magens Bay while swimming with his son, according to the V.I. Police Department.

According to the police, at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday 911 received a call reporting that there was a possible drowning on Magens Bay.

Ashby and his 12-year-old son were taking a swim when the father started having trouble. The father started yelling for help and the boy went for help. When he returned with assistance, Ashby “was unresponsive floating upright,” the police report said.

He was transported by ambulance to Schneider Regional Medical Center and subsequently pronounced dead.
