The U.S. Coast Guard cautions the public about very dangerous surf and marine conditions throughout the week, March 5-11. Large swells and breaking waves of over 14 feet around local coastal waters and seas 16 to 20 feet are expected Monday across Atlantic waters and passages off Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Coast Guard Watchstanders in Sector San Juan continue to monitor the weather due to these large surf conditions possibly affecting port safety in PR and USVI.
“Swimmers and boaters should take this high surf seriously and avoid being on the water until the sea state, high surf and dangerous rip currents subside,” said Capt. Eric P. King, commander of Sector San Juan and Captain of the Port. “We continue to monitor the large breakers and wind at the entrance of our ports to ensure the people and vessels coming in and out of the port remain safe.”
This heavy surf has the potential of impacting maritime commerce, recreational boaters and people conducting water related activities.
Vessels and facility operators, recreational boaters and people conducting water activities in the ocean, should pay close attention and monitor this situation through updated National Weather Service Advisories and take appropriate action to minimize the risks associated with these predicted conditions.
