The National Weather Service in San Juan has issued a Flash Flood Watch for portions of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. It affects the entire U.S. Virgin Islands Friday afternoon and into the upcoming weekend.
The highest chance for shower and thunderstorm activity is expected Friday afternoon into Saturday, particularly across the interior and east Puerto Rico as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands. In fact, deep tropical moisture will continue to prevail through early next week and therefore, periods of showers and thunderstorms are still expected on Sunday. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts likely each day. Soils are already saturated and most of the rivers and smallstreams are running above or well above normal levels, thereforethere is a high risk of river and small stream flooding as wella s mudslides in areas of steep terrain. Urban flooding is alsolikely across low lying areas as well as poorly drained areaswhere water pumps are not working at full capacity.
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that leadto flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
