In line with Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp’s proclamation that November is V.I. Recycles Month, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) is promoting its programs and initiatives to encourage recycling in the territory. Throughout the month, the authority has scheduled a number of outreach activities. Activities for the month include:
• A Weekly CBS TV2 News Feature about Recycling on Thursdays throughout the month
• Compost Workshops and Demonstrations
• Community Outreach Displays at various events
• Business Afterhours with the Chamber of Commerce
• An Upcycle Reusable Bag Contest for Students
• Start-up of the 2016/2017 School Aluminum Can Recycling Contest
Over the weekend of Nov. 5-7, VIWMA held compost workshops on St. Croix and St. John in partnership with the UVI Cooperative Extension Services and Gifft Hill School. Workshop participants learned about composting – nature’s way of recycling — and also entered a drawing to win a composter.
Catherine Prince of St. Croix and Peter Alter of St. John were winners of the composters. On St. Thomas, compost demonstrations will be held at the St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair set for Nov. 19 – 20.
This week, VIWMA encourages residents to visit community outreach displays at
• Kmart Sunny Isles on St. Croix and Lockhart Gardens on St. Thomas on Wednesday, Nov. 9
• WTJX Taste of Two Islands Event at the Mark Marin Center on Thursday, Nov. 10
• Reef Fest at Coral World Ocean Park Saturday, Nov. 12
• Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge St. Thomas Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 12
* National Park Service Celebration on Sunday, Nov. 13th
