A small, self-contained fire occurred around midday Thursday next to a large generating unit at the Water and Power Authority’s Estate Richmond power plant, according to WAPA.
The fire flared up in the generator accessory compartment of its large workhorse generate: Unit 20 during its start-up. WAPA personnel put the fire out quickly and it resulted in only minor damage to a transformer on the unit, WAPA acting Executive Director Julio Rhymer said in a statement.
“Plant operators were in the process of starting Unit 20 when the fire erupted in the transformer used to provide power to the unit’s cooling system,” Rhymer said. He added that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident and electrical service to WAPA’s customers was not affected.
WAPA evacuated the plant and called the Fire Service as a precaution.
