McFarlane is a rape survivor and is now using her own personal story to make a difference on a global scale. Her speech will reveal the power that stories hold in breaking silence and opening the path to healing.
– Sandra Maina – Kenyan-born atmospheric and climate scientist passionate about bridging the gap between science and community. She will speak about her first account experience with Climate Change Refugees in the United States and about how moving a village takes a village.
– Paul Cater Deaton – Internationally acclaimed, award-winning writer, producer, director and cinematographer. He has filmed on six continents and thrives in all spheres of production, from aerial to undersea. Deaton’s speech (accompanied by incredible visuals) explores the horrific loss of over 90 percent of the ocean’s apex predator, the shark.
– Katie Zaytoun – Executive director of Dancing Classrooms Virgin Islands, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization she founded in 2011 to provide the internationally acclaimed, social and emotional learning and arts-in-education program, Dancing Classrooms, to the children of the Virgin Islands. She will examine the relationship between arts education and how children, families, schools, and communities can go from surviving to thriving.
– Priscilla Hintz Rivera Knight – Director of PHR-Art Projects, a multidisciplinary enterprise that specializes in arts management consulting, curatorial services and arts-integrated projects. She will discuss how the arts and cultural assets can drive economic development in the Virgin Islands.
– Dr. Alexander Randall – Chairman and Professor of Communication at the University of the Virgin Islands. Dr. Randall has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Princeton and a Doctorate from Columbia. Dr. Randall will discuss how to remember your dreams and have them help you figure out who you are, where you are going and what to do with our life.
– Racquel Berry-Benjamin – Served as an educator and currently serves as an educational leader as deputy superintendent of Elementary Education in the St. Thomas-St. John School District. She will discuss how honoring your genetic code leads to true happiness.
– Steve Rockstein – Photographer, filmmaker, graphic artist and teacher. His images have been published and exhibited worldwide. He will deconstruct his process of conscience camera-work and reveal a place where art meets technology and the brain meets the heart.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today’s leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED’s annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
TED’s open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
