Sorority to Serve Meals to Homeless as Part of Annual Commitment

The St. Croix Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will hold its annual “Feed the Homeless” project from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Christian “Shan” Vegetable Market in Christiansted.
For over 15 years, the sorority has alternated from Frederiksted to Christiansted to serve free meals to the homeless as part of its ongoing commitment to serve the St. Croix community, especially those who often go hungry. Meals will include choices of chicken, fish and roast pork with sides to include macaroni and cheese, rice, stuffing, vegetables and rolls. Soft drinks will also be served.
This year’s goal is to serve 103 persons in tribute to the 103 years that Delta Sigma Theta Inc. has selflessly served communities throughout the nation and the world.
“The sorority’s ‘Feed the Homeless’ project is about reaching out to the less fortunate and underserved in our community,” said St. Croix Alumnae Chapter President Sandra L. Setorie. “St. Croix Alumnae Chapter adopted this annual project because we identified that there is a continuous need to help those in need, who often go hungry or without a hot meal for many days. We take this initiative very seriously, and we try to serve as many people as possible.”
This initiative is one of the sorority’s signature projects and is an ongoing service component in commemoration of its annual Founders Day ceremonies. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on Jan. 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University by 22 visionary women. It now boasts a sisterhood of over 250,000 predominately black, college-educated women committed to public service and with over 900 chapters worldwide.
Funding for the meals is provided by individual donations from chapter members. Chapter members also prepare and serve the meals.
