A man leaving a function at Coki Point beach early Monday told police he was driving away when he heard gunfire and realized he was shot.
According to the V.I. Police Department reported, a 23-year-old man, whose identity was not reported due to a department policy not to name victims, told police he tried to drive himself to the Schneider Regional Medical Center.
The victim told police he was alone in his vehicle and driving past the former Renaissance Resort Hotel when he heard the shots. On his way to the hospital he hit a guard rail and later his tire came off. He flagged down a passing motorist who took him to the hospital.
Police were dispatched to the hospital and spoke to the victim about 1:45 a.m. Monday
The victim told police he has no idea who the suspect was or from which direction the shots came.
Gunshots injured the victim on his left arm, left leg and the left side of his body. This vehicle was also damaged by gunfire.
This case is being investigated by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
