The Virgin Islands 10K Road Race held on Sept. 22 almost didn’t happen this year due to a decision of the NACAC 10K Series to take St. Croix off this year’s calendar. But local runners and walkers were able to toe the line for the V.I.’s version of the race named “The Virgin Islands 10K Road Race Championships.”
In what turned out to be a very close race for the top medals, Jason Snow won the race held on St. Croix scenic North Shore Road, by a very narrow one second margin with a time of 45:32 over Steve Horness 45:33. These two made the race competitive as Snow took the early lead and looked to ease to victory only to have Horness start to close what had been a large gap at the 5K turn around. At near Estate Rust Op and the four-mile mark, Horness caught and passed Snow only to have him as his shadow until less than 50 meters to the finish where Snow would pull away for the victory. Jay Glason was the third male finisher in 53:54; Joe Williamson was fourth in 54:47; Aaron Balkin was fifth in 56:56; Roger Hatfield was sixth in 57:54. Walkers Ronald Russell finished in 1:46.09; Andre Muhammad 1:46.10; Richard Muhammad and Kevin Muhammad completed a shortened course.
Heidi Snow the 2009 St. Croix International Marathon Champion, was the first place female finisher in 49:04; Julie Somer was second in 53:28; Amanda Wareheim was third in 58:11. Walkers Marcia Muhammad 2:12.49; Lenore Muhammad 2:12.26; Lynda Muhammad 2:12.26
Notes:
1] The race was open to all including participants in the V.I. Vegetarian Society Retreat held over the weekend.
2] Last year the NACAC 10K Series included St. Croix on its calendar. This year the races are being held in The Dominican Republic, The British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago and Martinique
