V.I. Scholars Hosts Annual Convocation Ceremony August 19

On Sunday, Aug. 19, the V.I. Scholars Summer Leadership Institute will host its second-annual Convocation Ceremony at 2:30 pm at the Westin Hotel on St. John. Senator Janette Millin-Young, chair of the Education, Youth and Culture Committee, will be delivering the keynote address. It is an organization that works with high school youth to develop them into future Virgin Islands leaders, empowering them to effectuate positive change within their local community. Each year, as the final event of its free three-week Summer Leadership Institute, V.I. Scholars hosts a convocation ceremony to showcase and celebrate the amazing community impact projects that its students have created to help others throughout the territory.
The organization strives to build a pipeline for leadership within the V.I. that strengthens the territory’s infrastructure, emboldens the importance of education and community, and increases the standard of living for all Virgin Islanders.
By bringing in an array of highly esteemed local leaders to talk to and advise students, the institute exposes youth to powerful, positive mentors, giving them the tools and the inspiration to go out into their own communities and create the change they wish to see. This week alone, the V.I. Scholars free Summer Leadership Institute will host Senator Shawn-Michael Malone on Monday, Labor Commissioner Albert Bryan Jr. on Tuesday, motivational speaker Sherman Brown on Wednesday, and Congresswoman Donna Christensen on Thursday.
The institute is about fostering responsible citizens. It is about empowering our youth. It about realizing that withouta serious investment in our youngsters today, there will be no brighter future for the Virgin Islands.
This year, the convocation ceremony is open to the entire community. All V.I. Scholars participants and their families will be in attendance, and all others are cordially invited in order to honor the students’ incredible accomplishments. RSVP is mandatory and can be done online at vischolars.eventbrite.com.
The event will begin promptly at 2:30 pm at the Westin Hotel (Great Cruz Bay, St. John, 00831 USVI). For additional information feel free to contact the V.I.
