The 28th anniversary of the Women’s Coalition Women Race brings attention to the abuse and violence against women. Women and girls of all ages are invited to run or walk. To be held in downtown Fredriksted at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 3. There will be plenty of food and entertainment after the race. Sons, fathers, brothers and friends line the street to cheer on the runners and walkers.
Awards will be presented to the overall winners and the top age group finishers. Schools, organizations and businesses are encouraged to send teams to participate in the event. Teams that pre-register will be recognized at the Race Start/Finish and will receive special certificates. A trophy will be awarded to the school with the most participants, and a Perpetual Trophy will be given to the school with the fastest team (minimum of five participants). A $250 gift certificate will be given to the school with the most participants (minimum of 25 team members).
There will be a pre-race warm-up at 4:35 p.m. the race will follow a two-mile course that starts at the fort in Frederiksted and finishes on Strand Street.
Participants are encouraged to pre-register. The entry fee is $15 and includes a T-shirt. Registration on race day is $20. Girls age 14 and under can register for $1, which does not include a T-shirt.
Preregistration is ongoing at these locations: Women’s Coalition, No. 45 Fisher Street, Christiansted (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Women’s Coalition Closet to Closet Thrift Store, No. 15 Peter’s Rest (Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and at the following places from 10 a.m. to noon: Florence Williams Library, Christiansted; Frederiksted Post Office; K-Mart, Sunshine Mall; K-Mart, Sunny Isle; and Stamina Sports.
Those who wish to participate can also pre-register online for the race for $15 and a processing fee of $2.65 at www.wcstx.com or www.virginislandspace.org. for those not on island, you can register at anytime through the Women Net Race. Walk, stroll or run wherever you are and send in your time after the race. The Women Net Race is an online event held in conjunction with the Women Race. Just register, do two miles anywhere, and post your results.
