Crime Stoppers wants you to know that federal and local laws clearly state that you cannot abuse, harm, sexually assault, threaten or stalk your partner. If you are a victim, you DO NOT have to face domestic violence alone, in fear or in shame.
Help is available at every community level. Many organizations have worked hard expel the notion that what happens at home is private. The truth is that when someone is hurt by his or her partner, it is a community problem – and if reported, it will get a community response.
Domestic violence is not tolerated in the Virgin Islands.
If you are a victim of domestic violence or know someone who is being victimized, you can do several things.
In an emergency, call 911 immediately. Otherwise call your local police precinct and ask for help from the Family Division of the Superior Court. On St. Thomas, call the Family Resource Center at 776-3966 or 776-STOP (7867). On St. John, call the St. John Community Crisis Center at 693-SAFE (7233). On St. Croix, call the Women’s Coalition at 773-9272.
Whether it’s physical or mental abuse, it must stop. If you know of anyone who is being harmed in a relationship, but has not reported it to law enforcement or any agency, let us know at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Your call could save a life.
