An inmate at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility on St. Croix was arrested and charged with murder for allegedly stabbing to death another inmate Saturday.
Police arrested 24-year-old Jahni Hamilton and charged him with first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Adrian Wheatley. Police said Hamilton used a shank to fatally stab Wheatley.
It was the 26th homicide in the territory since the beginning of the year, the 18th on St. Croix.
Police were alerted to a fight between two people inside the prison several minutes before 10 a.m. Saturday. Wheatley was taken by ambulance to the Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead there at 10:41 a.m.
Wheatley was born on St. Thomas, Hamilton on St. Croix. Both were serving time on assault charges.
Hamilton was arrested at about 4 p.m. and his bail was set at $2 million, which he was unable to post. He was returned to the prison pending his advice of rights hearing.
