Balky Engine Forces American Airlines Jet to Land at San Juan

American Airlines flight 412 bound for New York JFK from St. Thomas diverted to San Juan Friday afternoon after experiencing an engine problem.

Jose Nazario, Cyril King Airport manager, said the flight took off from St. Thomas at 1:59 p.m., and a 911 operator called shortly after to report calls received about a "weird sound like a loud bang" emanating from the aircraft.

Nazario said, "We were ready in case the flight returned to St. Thomas, but the tower controller here said the flight was going to San Juan, after experiencing a mechanical problem in the right engine."

The flight landed safely in San Juan at 2:34 p.m. Nazario said. He had no further information, but said he assumed the passengers had been covered on another flight to New York.

No further information was available from American Airlines Saturday.
