V.I. boxer Tiffany Reddick took the gold Thursday night, following wins over Panama and Nicaragua at this week’s qualifier tournaments for the 2011 Pan American Games, which will be held in October at Guadalajara, Mexico.
During their first two chances to qualify in Venezuela and Ecuador, Reddick and teammate Clayton Laurent Jr. came up short.
However, the third and final time was the charm, as both have now qualified for the 2011 Pan Am Games.
According to V.I. Boxing Federation spokeswoman Carolyn Wattley, Reddick "stomped" her opponent from Panama in the third round Wednesday night, then moved on to defeat Nicaragua’s Ledy Mayorga Thursday by a score of 10-8 to win the gold.
"Reddick is definitely making history by being the first female from the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the only female from the Caribbean to qualify for the 2011 Pan American Games," Wattley said in a release. "Ms. Reddick’s goal is to be the first female boxer from the Virgin Islands to qualify for the Olympics, and she’s well on her way."
According to a press release from the Boxing Federation, Laurent, a super heavyweight, had an "impressive win" Tuesday, scoring 12-10 against his opponent from Panama. Laurent, however, came up short Thursday against Colombian fighter Isaias Mena, 10-12, earning the silver medal.
