The St. Thomas Reformed Church is one of the oldest in the Caribbean. It was established here in the year 1660, brought by the first organized group of European settlers to the region. Its ministers and congregation have been involved in shaping the history of the island for over 350 years.
The present church building at the corner of Crystal and Nye Gades was built in 1844. It is the fourth house of worship, the first three having been destroyed by fires. In 1995 the church was destroyed by Hurricane Marilyn. It was restored with the help of hundreds of volunteers to its original elegance.
The pastor of the church for the last 14 years, Rev. Jeffrey Gargano, accepted a call to another ministry last July. The church consistory recently called the Rev. Jeffrey Neevel to be the new pastor. He will be installed at a later date.
The strength of the church also comes from its place in the world. It is part of the oldest denomination in America, the Reformed Church in America, founded in1628 by Dutch settlers in Manhattan.
