Get Rid of Debris Before Storms Hit

With two storms possibly headed this direction and more to come before the end of the season, it’s time to remove and dispose of unnecessary debris, waste and other non-hazardous waste materials from around your home and property, says the V.I. Waste Management Authority.

Secure any debris and other items around your home that could become airborne during a severe storm. For households that normally receive house-to-house collection services, only household waste and bagged yard waste will be picked up at the curbside. All other household waste can be taken to the bin sites, and debris and bulk waste can be taken directly to the landfills or transfer station.

Residents are asked to dispose of household waste at the bin site before 10 a.m. Monday so Waste Management has time to clear out the bin sites before a storm might hit. Waste carts located in the downtown areas are to be emptied by noon Monday.

Please do not take batteries, tires, medical, liquid or hazardous waste, appliances and vehicles, asbestos, grease, junked cars, gas cylinders, construction and demolition debris to the public disposal bin sites. Many of these items are to be taken directly to the landfill or transfer station.

Businesses are reminded that their waste is to be taken directly to the landfill or transfer station by a licensed and permitted waste hauler. Any business found utilizing a public bin site for disposal of commercial waste will be cited, according to Waste Management.

The landfills and transfer station can accept appliances, such as refrigerators and stoves; bulk waste, such as bedding and furniture; vehicles without tires, batteries or fluids; gas cylinders that are punctured or have the tops cut off; construction and demolition debris in 4-inch cubes; and yard waste and scrap metal that is reduced to 4-feet lengths.

Hazardous waste, including but not limited to medical and liquid waste, fluorescent bulbs and electronic waste, are to be disposed of through a permitted private waste hauler and at a permitted disposal site.

For more information, contact your respective landfill: Anguilla Landfill 778-1231, Bovoni Landfill 775-3665, and the Susannaberg Transfer Station 776-6346.
