Fashion Flings into Spring at Family Resource Center Fundraiser

March 15, 2009 — Fashion took on a flavorful local flair Saturday in the Family Resource Center's Spring Fashion Fling Show at MCM Center at Antilles School.
In its third year, the Spring Fashion Fling featured models donning apparel by Bella Vera Boutique, House of Ettienne, New Horizon Clothing, Frantz Coulanges, Jeff Purcell of Uni Davis Sportswear, Collette Jones of CJ's Glam'or, Chicco's, Rainbow Kids, Chereene's, Local Color and young designer Cliaunjel Williams — to name a few.
During the glamorous evening of family fun and fashion, the audience was reminded of the central cause for the event: raising money for the Family Resource Center (FRC) on St. Thomas, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of violence against women. Known as the organization's biggest annual fundraiser, tickets to the Fling cost $25 for adults and $10 for children.
The spirit of volunteerism was evident as working models and volunteer student models shared the runway in styles that were fresh, funky, elegant and unique. Amid the vibrant showcase of spring fashions, CeCe's Closet, an FRC-run boutique, had some designer duds to debut on the runway. CeCe's, which has been open for about two years, is located in the same building as the FRC on Bunker Hill and features gently used yet often high-end styles.
"It's what we call a second-chance boutique … mostly designer label," explained Polly Watts, chairperson of the Development Events Committee of the FRC board of directors.
Clothes sold at CeCe's are often designer label and usually expensive pieces donated from stores.
"So when it's sold at CeCe's Closet, consumers get a huge discount," Watts said. "There is clothing available for newborns, children, teens, adults and plus sizes."
Saturday's live entertainment proved to be a crowd pleaser, in addition to the sweet homemade treats available at the concession stand throughout the evening. There was a little something for everyone, including a raffle and door prizes enabling a few lucky audience members to depart with jewelry, gift certificates and other goodies.
"These fashion shows have definitely been instrumental in raising funds and awareness," Watts said. "These shows are affordable to the community and the models really enjoy coming out."
