St. Croix Reading Association Holds Conference March 21

March 14, 2009 – St. Croix Council of the International Reading Association Conference will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 21, at Alfredo Andrews Elementary School. The organization's slogan is Reading, Writing and Technology – Working Together as One. The conference will offer eight workshops, and a continental breakfast and luncheon are included.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Donald Leu, IRA board member and chair of literacy and technology at the University of Connecticut. He is a member of the board of directors of the International Reading Association and was elected to the Reading Hall of Fame. Leu is an international authority on the new forms of reading comprehension the Internet requires and how best to prepare students for reading and learning in an online age of information.
The cost for council members and UVI students is $20, and for non-members, $50. Pre-registration, open until March 14, is $5 extra. Late registration is open until March 16, and there will be no registration at the door.
