Celebrate October as Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month

Oct. 19, 2005 – The Humane Society of St. Thomas, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and Pethealth Inc. celebrate October as Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. Each year, approximately 8 – 12 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide and approximately 5 – 9 million are euthanized. We want to help change that. With our theme Every Dog Counts, we join together to raise awareness about dogs in need of adoption.
In addition to dogs and cats available for adoption at the shelter, several events featuring dogs for adoption will be scheduled during the month of October concluding with Barktoberfest, sponsored by Cape Air and Bolongo Bay Beach Resort. Barktoberfest will be at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort on Sunday, Oct. 30, from noon to 5 p.m.
This is the fourth year of Barktoberfest, which offers a fun-filled afternoon where families and their pets can enjoy a day at the beach. Contests include: Best Trick, Fastest Dog, Best Costume, Best Kisser, and Best Island Dog. The event is free to the public. There is $10 fee to enter the contests. Raffles offering a variety of prizes will be held and a Blessing of the Animals will be conducted in the afternoon.
