Earlier this year, my office conducted a research regarding the accessibility of computers to students in the St. Thomas/St. John District. Our research revealed that students are not adequately exposed to computers; thus, making them less likely to succeed in a very competitive and ever evolving technological world.
My office embarked upon an outreach initiative designed to better prepare and familiar students in the St. Thomas/St. John District with the use of the computer and the critical role this technology will play in their future. Our intent is to collaborate with corporate entities to provide computers and appropriate training to various schools, churches, civic and community youth groups and organizations who can demonstrate the need, commitment, and desire to make this knowledge available to the individuals they serve. Our goal is to provide 50 computers in September 2004, free of charge to applicants who meet the requirements.
Four persons have been selected to serve as program directors. These directors have established the criteria and eligibility standards by which the computers will be awarded. I am pleased to inform you that a donor has been identified and have agreed to bear the entire cost of supplying the computers.
Additionally, an application form was designed to accommodate the award process. I am cordially inviting your organization to participate in Senator Celestino White Computer Outreach Initiative by submitting an application for consideration before the July 15, 2004, deadline. Applications can be obtained from my Senate office. My Chief Researcher, Franke Hoheb, has been designated as the contact person in my office for the computer outreach initiative. Mr. Hoheb can be reached at 693-3568.
