Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has extended congratulations to President-elect George W. Bush and thanks to Vice President Al Gore for his years of service, according to a release from Government House.
"As loyal Americans we join the rest of our great nation in supporting you as you lead our great republic into the 21st century and the new millenium," Turnbull wrote Bush. He cited the "great challenges and opportunities ahead for our country" and for the 43rd president and invited Bush to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Turnbull, a Democrat, thanked Gore for his support of the territory and that of the Clinton administration.
"During the past eight years, the people of the Virgin Islands have been the beneficiary of great and much-needed assistance from the Clinton-Gore administration as we have struggled to improve the quality of life of the people of this American territory," the governor wrote. "With you as vice president we knew we had a friend who we could count on for assistance and support in times of difficulty."
Turnbull also invited Gore and his family to visit the territory.
