Man Dies, Woman Injured in STX Vehicle Accident

A man was killed and a woman injured Tuesday in a single car accident on St. Croix’s South Shore Road, the V.I. Police Department reported. Neither person in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt, the police said.

The victim who died was identified by the police as 28-year-old Deshea Douglas, who was driving the vehicle. The woman who was passenger in the vehicle was not identified by police in accordance with department policy.

According to police, at about 1:28 a.m. Tuesday, the 911 emergency call center received a report of a one-car accident on South Shore Road, just west of the Catherine’s Rest intersection.

Officers arrived on scene and found the vehicle, a black 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, on its roof. The occupants were thrown out of the vehicle in the accident. Douglas, the driver of the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The passenger was transported to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition.

Police said the investigation revealed that excessive speed may have been a factor in the accident, and the occupants of the vehicle were not wearing their seat belts.

In its report on the incident, the VIPD asked the community to exercise caution and drive safely. Whenever you drive, ensure that all occupants use their seat belts, drive within the speed limit, obey all posted signs and focus on the road ahead.
