Over the weekend, Governor John P. deJongh Jr. offered the condolences of the people of the Virgin Islands to the family and friends of Sgt. Lyle Dervin Turnbull who died in Kuwait at the end of last week from an apparent medical condition. Turnbull was a member of the Charlotte Amalie High School Class of 2000.
“There is a great sense of loss each time we learn of the death of a Virgin Islands solider. Sgt. Turnbull had been deployed to Kuwait as part of the ongoing Operation Enduring Freedom military assignment. Our prayers are with his wife and children, his parents, his extended family, his fellow soldiers and friends during this time of bereavement,” deJongh said.
For all of us, the deployment of our military personnel is a constant and stark reminder of the great risk they put themselves at to defend the freedom and liberties we enjoy each day. “The people of the Virgin Islands join Cecile and me in extending our heartfelt sympathies to Sgt. Turnbull’s family. We thank his family for his dedication and commitment to protecting our freedom as a member of the United States Armed Forces,” de Jongh said.
Information provided by the V.I. National Guard indicated that Sgt. Turnbull served in the 62nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 11th Signal Brigade, in Fort Hood, Texas.
