DPNR Implements Visit-Able Housing Design and Incentive Program

The Visit-able Housing Design and Incentive Program began Oct. 1 through DPNR’s Building Permit Office, according to a press release issued on Monday by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR). New legislation gives property tax incentives to Virgin Islanders who volunteer to make their newly-constructed or renovated home accessible through permitting regulations established by DPNR.
Through its permitting process, the department will guide an applicant through the rules and regulations for securing a Certificate of Visit-ability upon successful completion of the requirements of the law. The certificate will enable homeowners to receive a 20 percent tax deduction on their Property Tax for 10 years.
Applicants for certification through the program must file a Certificate of Intent with the DPNR’s Division of Building Permits. The building permit process protects the owner’s interest and those of the community at large, and helps to ensure that any structural installation or alteration change is safe. In order to expedite the building permit request, a complete application is needed.
What do I need to apply for a Building Permit?
* Application for a Building Permit
* Permit application Control Form
* Proof of Ownership (Deed, Affidavit, etc.)
* Complete Scope of Work or drawing if applicable
* Pay Application Fee ($20) and Permit Fee
For more information on the Visit-able Housing Design and Incentive Program, contact the Division of Building Permits on St. Croix at 773-1082 or on St. Thomas at 774-3320.
