Free Park Service Lecture Focuses on Boat Safety

A free public lecture on "Boat Safety and Visitor Responsibility at Buck Island Reef National Monument" will be Thursday as part of the celebration of Buck Island Reef’s 50th anniversary year as a national monument, the National Park Service announced.

The series of public lectures takes place every second Thursday of each month.

Thursday’s lecture will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building.

This month’s lecture examines the Federal Regulations and enforcement practices that are used within the Park boundaries. The evening’s goal is to create an informal setting where citizens can ask questions about regulations and security needs. The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be free and open until 7 p.m.

Dates and topics for coming lectures in the series are:

• Nov. 8 – Recent Marine Research and Mapping Changes in our Reef.

• Dec. 13 – Buck Island’s Ancient Peoples: Seen and Unseen.
