Coral Reef Discovery Week is a free camp for local students aged 15-19 years to learn about the natural marine resources and marine science career opportunities of the U.S. Virgin Islands. This camp will take place from 8 a.m. until 4:30 pm June 25-29 at the University of the Virgin Islands Center for Marine and Environmental Studies. This fun and hands-on experience is supported by UVI students and staff and is made possible with sponsorship from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. The camp focuses on increasing the diversity of marine science educational opportunities offered in the territory with the ultimate goal of increasing local participation in marine science.
The camp learning objectives include biological science, social studies, technology and geography (GIS), physical education, and career building, with an emphasis on evaluating coral reefs’ role in U.S.V.I.’s daily life and the “ridge to reef” approach to conservation. Participants will develop advanced snorkeling skills, interact with scientists, managers and UVI students, and will be exposed to various scientific careers. Activities include swimming, snorkeling, boating, kayaking and hiking. A snorkeling guide book, dive skin/rash guard, and pizza party will be provided. Snorkeling gear is available if participants do not bring their own.
