The VI Waste Management Authority advises solid waste and septic haulers that their current permits expired on April 30, 2009. Permits for 2009 are still being issued to solid waste and wastewater haulers who use the territory’s landfills and treatment plants upon completion of the application process.
Effective Aug. 31, any hauler not displaying a VIWMA 2009 (red) decal and holding a valid permit shall be cited in accordance with Title 19 Chapter 56 § 1560-203(a) and 1560-204(a), VI Rules and Regulations. In accordance with Title 19 Chapter 56 § 1562 (a) and (b), VI Code, minimum fine for accessing VIWMA’s facilities without an approved permit is $1,000.
All companies, including government, semi-autonomous and autonomous agencies, who utilize the landfills or wastewater treatment plants for disposal, are required to have a Solid Waste Collection and Disposal Permit or Septage Disposal Permit. Applications can be picked up from the VI Waste Management Authority’s Division of Compliance Management and Environmental Enforcement, at the following VIWMA locations:
· St. Croix- 941-946 Estate Williams Delight, Frederiksted
· St. Thomas – 8244 Sub Base (Department of Public Works)
· St. John – 6506 Susannaberg (Department of Public Works)
To obtain a waste haulers’ permit, the following are to be presented at the time of submitting the application: Valid vehicle registration and insurance, current business license, proof of liability insurance and VIPD Inspection Report, if applicable.
An appointment will be given for vehicle inspections after review of the permit application. Vehicles must successfully pass an inspection, the following shall be assessed: hydraulics system, vehicles’ body and dump box, lights and tools (tarpaulin, rake/shovel/broom, and scones/reflector lights).
Fees are based on the number of vehicles operated by the respective hauler. Please make money orders or certified checks payable to VIWMA.
