May 19, 2007 – Scholarships are available for graduating members of the V.I. Department of Education's Future Educators of the Virgin Islands (FEVI) program. "The 2007 public high school graduates who are members in good standing of the FEVI program are eligible to receive scholarship support for their enrollment in the full-time teacher preparation program at the University of the Virgin Islands," Director of Human Resources Alscess Brown said. Interested students should contact their school guidance counselor by Tuesday, May 29.
The scholarship is being offered to those pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in the areas of: Mathematics, Elementary Education, Foreign Languages, English, Reading, History and Science, according to a press release from the Education, according to a press release from Education, according to a press release from Education.
Candidates will be required to complete an application, which includes an essay on the topic: "Discuss the ways in which you can make a difference to Virgin Islands society in your role as a teacher." Essays will be evaluated by a panel and each finalist interviewed. Selected candidates will be required to spend a minimum of 16 hours each month in a mentoring partnership with a current teacher/mentor in a public school.
Upon successful completion of under-graduate studies, scholarship recipients will be required to work for the V.I. Department of Education for the time equivalent to the number of years the scholarship was received, i.e., one full year for each year they received the scholarship.
