Emancipation Day and 4th of July: Ensuring Traffic Safety During Celebrations

As the Virgin Islands prepare for Emancipation Day and the 4th of July celebrations, the Virgin Islands Police Department and Office of Highway Safety urge all residents and visitors to prioritize traffic safety during this busy time of increased travel and festivities.

“Impaired driving is a major concern during holiday celebrations,” said K’Tonya Petrus, VIOHS Impaired Driving Program manager. “If you plan to drink, ensure you have a sober ride home. Remember, if you feel different, you drive different. Let’s keep our roads safe for everyone.”

Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself in a vehicle. Ensure that all passengers are buckled up every time you get in a car. “Seat belts save lives, and it’s crucial to make them a non-negotiable part of your journey,” Denise Gomes, VIOHS Occupant Protection coordinator, emphasized.

With increased pedestrian activity during the holidays, drivers are reminded to stay alert and watch for pedestrians, especially in crowded areas and near event locations. Pedestrians should also be cautious, use crosswalks, and remain visible to drivers, according to the press release.

Speeding endangers everyone on the road. Adhere to posted speed limits and drive according to road conditions. “Speed limits are in place to protect everyone. Let’s all do our part by driving at safe speeds,” urged VIOHS Director Daphne O’Neal.

Stay Safe Tips:
• Buckle Up: Always wear your seatbelt. It’s your best defense in a crash.
• Stay Focused: Avoid distractions. Keep your phone out of reach while driving.
• Stay Sober: If you plan to drink, arrange for a sober ride home.
• Slow Down: Adhere to speed limits and drive according to conditions.
• Watch for Pedestrians: Be vigilant, especially in crowded areas.
