The St. Croix Council of Elders (COE) is hosting an event on Sunday, June 23, to expand awareness around elderhood and promote membership. All adult generations in the community are invited.

Council members have held the community brunch once before over the years and plan to make this an annual event.

“Our community brunch is a welcoming, informal gathering with a reminder that elderhood
is not about your age and that membership on the Council is multigenerational,” noted
Iya Tahirah Abubakr, COE member and co-founder.

The council members are planning for an interactive conversation to focus on answering
questions about what it means to be an elder and the roles of elders and COEs in the
community. “We’re looking forward to a lively and informative discussion for the attendees
and for us. Intergenerational communication is key for all of us and for our future,” said
COE member Sara Hayes.

The community brunch will be held in the courtyard of the Caribbean Museum Center for
the Arts in Frederiksted, from 12 to 3 p.m. Tickets for the brunch are available
for a donation of $30 on Eventbrite or by contacting Sara Hayes for more information,
at stcroixcouncilofelders@gmail.com.

The council will also be offering an orientation and workshop retreat on elderhood in the
near future, to provide more education and guidance on becoming community elders.

The St. Croix Council of Elders, Inc., was founded in 2014. Their mission: to offer and
provide counsel, leadership and education based upon the wisdom teachings of the
Creator handed down through our ancestors to wise men and women present among us
today, and to work in a cooperative manner with all others to restore justice and build
peaceful communities. There are currently eight active members on the St. Croix Council
of Elders.
