Juan Acosta Perez Dies at 88

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Juan Acosta Perez, affectionately known as “Papi,” on Friday, March 15, at the age of 88.

Juan was born in Culebra, Puerto Rico, on Aug. 29, 1935, to the late Jose “Pepito” Acosta Gonzales and Benita Acosta Perez. In 1990, he retired from the Government of the Virgin Islands, Division of Public Works, where he served as a construction supervisor, marking 34 years of retirement this year.

A devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (Sunny Acres), Juan shared 64 years of marriage with Carmen “Gloria” Acosta. Juan found immense joy in helping others, fishing, camping and cherishing moments with his beloved wife, six children, 25 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Juan was preceded in death by his parents: Benita Acosta Perez and Jose “Pepito” Acosta Gonzales; brothers: Jose Luis Acosta and Ruben Acosta Sr.; and son, Jose E. Quiñones.

Juan is survived by his wife, Carmen “Gloria” Acosta; brothers and sister: Iris V. Garcia, Cesario Acosta Sr. and Cesar Anibal Acosta Sr.; children: Iris V. Acosta Magras, Benedicta “Bennie” Acosta-Donastorg, Juan “Papo” Acosta, Carmen Rosa Acosta-Hudson, Hector “Hecky Heck” Acosta and Samuel “Sammy” Acosta; sons-in-law: David Magras Sr., Adlah Donastorg Jr. and John Hudson, Sr.; daughters-in-law: Amanda Jackson, Margaret Acosta and Anchanet Acosta; brother-in-law, Felix Garcia; sisters-in-law: Luz Maria Acosta and Lydia Santos; and special caregiver, Windie Graham.

He is also survived by grandchildren: David “Junie” Magras Jr., Natalie Yvonne Magras, Tiffany Kimberly Acosta, Jose “Ring King” Acosta, Latoya Acosta, John Hudson Jr. Adlah “Cito” Donastorg III, Vanessa Mari Donastorg-King, Damari Natasha Acosta, Michael “Mikey” Magras, Carmen N. Hudson, Erika Elizabeth Donastorg, Chantel Acosta, Ale’sha N. Acosta-Orr, Hector “Heckito” Acosta, Shyra Acosta, Joshua A. Bhoolai Acosta, Samuel Acosta Jr., Joel A. Bhoolai Acosta, Isaiah Acosta and Angel Acosta.

Other survivors include grandsons-in-law: Donnie King Sr, and Denatio Orr Sr.; granddaughters-in-law: Adonna Hudson and Shakarita Magras; great-grandchildren: David Magras III, Aldwyn A Codrington Jr., Lei’Lani A. Santos, Kianna De’ja Magras, Lei’La A. Roebuck, Makayla Victoria Magras, Faisal Acosta, Jayden J. Hudson, Kenia-Lee Acosta, A’meri N. Bartley, Lei’Zion A. Roebuck, Malachi Acosta, Alijah E. Hudson, Kai Lynn Magras, Kimora Violeta Magras, Jayce L. Pearson, Shiloh Marion Magras, Basil A Williams III, Denatio Orr Jr., Talief A Pryce Jr., Dre’Mane Orr, Natalia Aniyah Pryce, Jovon R. Mingo Jr., A’maya J. Mingo, Maya Mari King, Saniah Imani Hudson, Londyn Rose Pearson, A’zena Orr, Jaselah Reya Acosta and Donnie M. King Jr.; nephews and nieces: Lizette Encarnacion, Yolanda Maisonet, Minerva “Betty” Acosta, Jose Carlos Acosta, Janytsie Lindquist-Saldana, Peggy Lee Nestor, Yomary Acosta Pace, Cesar Jr, Carlos Alberto, Nelson Acosta, Edgardo Jr., Rosalinda, Noemi, Miguel and Luis Angel Acosta; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

The initial viewing is scheduled for 2-4 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at James Memorial Funeral Home. A second viewing will take place at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 24, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Sunny Acres. Interment will be at Kingshill Cemetery.
