On Sunday morning, a small cohort of multi-sport enthusiasts congregated at the Divi Casino parking lot for the annual DU Your Best Duathlon, organized by the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation.

The event kicked off with a brisk 1-mile run on a relatively flat route, before transitioning to a challenging 14-mile bike ride, followed by a concluding 3-mile run.

Leading the pack in the initial run leg was Stephen Swanton, setting a swift pace with a time of 6:27 for the first mile. Close behind was Julie Sommer, clocking in at 7:16, with Robin Seila trailing just 10 seconds later.

Known for his exceptional cycling prowess, Swanton blazed through the 14-mile bike course, crossing the finish line in 41 minutes. Seila, known for her indoor training focus and emphasis on speed, followed closely behind with a time of 42:50. Glenn Massiah secured the third position, edging out Sommer by a mere two seconds, with relay cyclist Wayne Nichols following closely.

Sealing his victory with a dominant performance in the final 3-mile run, Swanton claimed first place overall with a total time of 1:10:29. Kevin Burton secured the second spot among male competitors, finishing in 1:25:29, followed by Massiah in third with a time of 1:31:50.

Among the female participants, Seila, also Swanton’s spouse, emerged as the leading contender, finishing second overall with a commendable time of 1:16:17. Sommer claimed the runner-up position with a time of 1:20:56, while Megan Mault secured third place. In the relay division, Kelly Simon and Wayne Nichols clinched the top spot.

Looking ahead, the next event on the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation calendar, Island Hoppers, is scheduled for Sunday, March 24. This unique two-person “leap frog” relay will feature four miles of running and four miles of biking, with a preference for mountain bikes due to a portion of the course being off-road.
