Order of Malta Members Celebrate ‘Lourdes in a Day’ Mass for the Sick

Members of the Order of Malta recently observed their sixth annual “Lourdes in a Day” event at Our Lady of Perpetual Church on St. Thomas.

Lourdes in a Day — held on Feb. 13 — is a special Mass celebrated for those who are sick. During the service they are anointed and given Holy Water from Lourdes, France.

The Virgin Islands Area is one of 30 Areas that are part of the Order of Malta, American Association.

The Order of Malta is a 900-year-old lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. Since its foundation the Order’s mission has been to serve the sick and the poor through the works of its members.

Today, the Order of Malta has more than 13,000 members worldwide “dedicated to promoting God’s glory and to nurturing their spiritual life through charitable and relief efforts.”
