One firefighter remains hospitalized while another injured in an early morning blaze Thursday in downtown St. Thomas has been released from Schneider Regional Medical Center, according to V.I. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
The fire, reported just after 3 a.m. on Vester Gade, quickly spread to adjacent buildings, including a four-story residence, according to the Fire Service, which issued an update late Thursday afternoon.
“The fire originated in Vester Gade 6-D and Gamble Gade No. 31, where it quickly engulfed the initial structure and spread to adjacent buildings, including a four-story residence,” the report stated. “The V.I. Fire and Emergency Medical Services promptly deployed nine pieces of firefighting equipment, with units from Hotel Company, Echo Tango, and Lima dispatched to assist,” it said.
A total of 27 on- and off-duty firefighters and personnel worked to combat the fire that was reported just after 3 a.m., with two of them sustaining injuries, according to the report. It did not detail the extent of those injuries. “Our thoughts, prayers, and gratitude go out to the injured firefighters and their families,” it said.
The fire was brought under control about two and a half hours after crews arrived on the scene, according to the Fire Service. Salvage efforts and thorough inspections were conducted for another two hours to ensure all hotspots were eliminated and the area was secure, it said.
“While this incident posed significant challenges, I commend our teams’ bravery and tireless dedication during this operation. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the injured firefighters and their families during their recovery,” said VIFEMS Director Daryl George.
The investigation into the cause of the fire continues. VIFEMS also extended its gratitude to the EMS Unit, 911 Control Center, the V.I. Police Department, St. Thomas Rescue, and the V.I. Water and Power Authority for their collaborative response and support during the incident.
