The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) hosted a Public Town Hall meeting, both in-person and via Zoom, on Sunday, April 23, in preparation for the Altona Lagoon Temporary Bridge construction project on St. Croix.
The existing Altona Lagoon Bridge was damaged during the 2017 hurricanes and will undergo emergency repairs in the coming months, thus the need for a temporary bridge to maintain access. Construction is expected to begin next month on the temporary bridge — pending final approvals — and is expected to take about eight weeks to complete. Once the temporary bridge is done, work on the existing bridge will begin and that is expected to take about four months.
DPW Construction Program Manager Piotr Gajewski provided details regarding the upcoming bridge construction/replacement at the town hall. “Once the one-lane temporary bridge (one-way traffic) is constructed, the existing bridge will be closed and barricaded,” said Gajewski. “Access to the lagoon park will then transition to the temporary bridge.”
Representatives from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources; Sports, Parks and Recreation; as well as the project contractor (V.I. Paving) were also in attendance.
DPW will continue to keep the public updated as the project progresses.
