Julia Matthew Dies at 88

Julia Matthew

It is with profound sadness that the family of Julia Matthew, affectionately known as “Ms. Charly,” of St. John announces her transition from this earth on Sept. 29 at the age of 88.

She is survived by her special great nephew and primary caretaker, Roosevelt Davis and family; nephews: Theophilus Davis, Henry Davis, James Davis, Lebelts Davis, Solomon Matthew, George Matthew and Jennings Henry; nieces: Elizabeth Davis, Louise Matthew, Ellen Huggins, Helena Isaac, Diana Palmer and Mary Crosse; special great-niece, Violet Davis; as well as many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

She was born on St. Kitts and migrated to the Virgin Islands where she resided on St. John for over 60 years.  Her last place of employment was at the Julius E. Sprauve School; she retired in 2001 after about 12 years.

Special thanks to Sandra Bradley, Ana Jimenez and members of the VI Caregiver Support Program.

The first viewing is from 4-6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at Turnbull’s Funeral Home. The second viewing will be held at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at City Seventh-day Adventist Church. Interment will be at Western Cemetery No. 2.

Tributes can be sent to misscharly@yahoo.com by Oct. 18. Funeral arrangements are by Turnbull’s Funeral Home and Crematory Services.
