A woman on St. Croix was arrested for fraud on Monday, the V.I. Police Department reported Tuesday.
Noemi Martinez, 25, turned herself into police on Monday and was arrested for passing forged bills, obtaining money by false pretenses, forgery, grand larceny, and identity theft, according to the police report.
Detectives launched an investigation on April 19, 2018, that revealed Martinez cashed a counterfeit check for $939.32 using the Virgin Islands Housing Authority’s account information, the report stated.
Martinez used her real identity to cash the check at the Market, formally known as Plaza Extra West, knowing that the check was not issued to her, according to police.
Bail for Martinez was set at $50,000. She was unable to post bail and was remanded to the Bureau of Adult Corrections Facility pending an advice of rights hearing scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Superior Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands, police said.
