Rotary Club of St. Croix Mid-Isle Awards Scholarships, Installs New Board

At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of St. Croix Mid-Isle, the club awarded $30,000 in scholarships to four St. Croix high  school seniors.

Ocwen USVI Services LLC Scholarship

“We are delighted to award this year’s Ocwen USVI Services LLC Scholarship to Michele Pemberton who will attend Howard University in the fall. Ms. Pemberton is a recent graduate from the St. Croix Central High School and plans to pursue a course of study in nursing with a minor in biology before moving on to pursue her doctorate. She will receive $5,000 per academic year for four years,” said club President Nadia Bougouneau.

The Rotary Club Mid-Isle has a dynamic partnership with Ocwen USVI Services LLC whose contributions are dedicated to a graduating high school senior from the St. Croix Central High School or the St. Croix Educational Complex on a college path.

This year, because of the quality of her applications, a special Ocwen scholarship of $2,000 was awarded to Nancy Parrilla.

Carlton Hodgson Memorial Scholarship

President Nadia continued with information about the Hodgson Scholarship, “The club is also proud to award an academic scholarship to Yaira Ortiz and Melvyn Fox.

“[Ortiz], a graduate of … St. Croix Educational Complex, plans on pursuing a degree in marine biology at the University of Miami.  Fox is a graduate of Good Hope Country Day School and will be pursuing a degree in music engineering at Howard University in the fall.”

The Hodgson Scholarship if $1,000 per academic year for four years.

Rotary Club of St. Croix Mid-Isle celebrated the new Rotary year with Rotary Club of St. Croix Harborside by installing their new boards of directors with special guests Louis Weaver, past district governor from St. Maarten and Deborah Howell, district governor.

Both Weaver and Howell discussed the signifigance of this Rotary year as it is the first year in its 117 year history that Rotary International has a female president: Jennifer Jones.  Her theme is “Imagine Rotary.”

The new board for Rotary Club of St. Croix Mid-Isle includes:

President – Nadia Bougouneau

President-elect – Robert Mendez Immediate Past President – Marcel Galiber

Vice President – Richard Grant

Secretary – Elizabeth Goggins

Treasurer – Holly Fulkerson

Sergeant-at-Arms – John Harper,

Directors – Tina Beazer, Lambert Dempster Sana Joseph Smith and Anestine Etienne.

President – Sandra Gerard-Leung President-elect – Marcellino Ventura Immediate Past President – Lionel Downer Vice President – Benjamin Mshila

Secretary – Heather Stephenson-Proctor Treasurer – Kristina Vandenberg

Director – Joan Claxton.

$!0,000 Cash Raffle

Raffle winner Radiance Lang Wise was presented a check for $10,000 at the Rotary Mid-Isle meeting on July 13. Her luck carried over to the meeting because she also won the club’s 50/50 raffle during the meeting.

Second ($1,500) and third ($500) place winners, Clancy Etienne and Kamuel Etienne, respectively, had their checks mailed to them as they live off island.

President Bougouneau thanked everyone who had purchased raffle tickets and all the outlets that allowed members to set up and sell raffle tickets, including The Market, Leatherback Brewery, Ziggy’s Island Market and Level Up Gas Station.  “Through the raffle ticket sales, we were able to fully fund our Hodgson Memorial Scholarship for 2023 and support many of our community service projects.  Thank you all,” said Bougouneau.

Rotary Club of St. Croix Mid-Isle meets every at 7 a.m., Wednesday, at Gertrude’s Restaurant.  Guests and visitors are always welcome.
