CSVI Creates ‘Colors of Cancer Campaign’ to Raise $50,000 for Cancer Patients

Throughout May, Cancer Support VI is raising awareness and funds for Virgin Islanders impacted by cancer through their Colors of Cancer campaign. Up to $25,000 in donations will be matched by Baker Magras & Associates, a division of Marshall and Sterling.

This is the first year CSVI is having this campaign which ends on May 31.

“It was started because in the beginning of the year, Bobby James lost his battle with cancer. He was just a young guy and his fiancé Chloe was pretty amazing during his battle with cancer. And he was somebody that we assisted. It was his dying wish that we passed on the information that there is help available,” said Barb Michaud, director of CSVI.

One hundred percent of all funds donated to CSVI are given directly to cancer patients on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Up to $1,000 is given to insured patients and up to $2,500 is given to uninsured patients every year. So far, over 120 grants have been dispersed from CSVI to cancer patients, totaling over $145,000.

“We live on an island with limited resources. So many cancer patients come to us at a later stage. We’re in a place where they’re too afraid to ask or they’re prideful, they don’t want anyone in the community to know that they have cancer, so it’s our mission to leave no cancer patient behind,” said Michaud.

“It’s not just the cancer patient,” Michaud said. “It’s people like Chloe, who are like the caregiver, or the family … passing on love, compassion, kindness and awareness.”

Nefta Romain created a YouTube video (see above) to raise awareness and showcase persons who have benefited from donations given to CSVI.
