DOH Says Death of St. Thomas Man May be COVID-Related

The Virgin Islands Department of Health said on Sunday it was investigating the unexpected death of a 41-year-old man on St. Thomas. The man had recovered from COVID-19 five weeks ago, the department said in its news release.

Health officials are waiting for an evaluation from the medical examiner for more details to determine if there was any direct relation to COVID-19.

The deceased’s next of kin has been notified, the department said.

While there has been no confirmation that COVID-19 was involved in the death, nor any indication why DOH was looking into the death if it is COVID related it will be the 25th death related to COVID-19 in the territory.

In its news release, the department extends condolences to the family of the deceased and continues to work with other agencies in taking actions to slow the spread of COVID-19. The department encouraged residents to continue to follow these precautionary measures:
– Stay at home,
– Practice social distancing,
– Wear a mask when in the company of others outside of those in your household,
– Clean frequently used areas thoroughly, and
– Wash your hands often with soap and warm water.

Suspected cases of COVID-19 can be reported by calling 340-712-6299 or 340-776-1519. Medical emergencies can be reported by calling 911.
