A woman injured in a traffic accident on Tuesday was pulled from her burning car by a pair of bystanders, the V.I. Police Department reported.
According to the police, officers were dispatched at 8:46 p.m. Nov.17 to the Melvin Evans Highway after receiving reports of an auto accident.
Investigation revealed that a white Ford Focus was traveling west on the highway when the female driver – whose name was not released in accordance with department policy – lost control of the vehicle, hitting and destroying a utility pole. The driver was injured, and the vehicle caught fire.
Two men in the area heard the impact and rushed to investigate. They found the driver in the burning vehicle and got her out. She was transported by ambulance to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.
Firefighters from the Virgin Islands Fire Service traveled to the scene and extinguished the burning car. Officers from the VIPD’s Traffic Investigation Bureau are investigating the cause of the crash.
The collision caused a power outage that affected customers on five power feeders, according to the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.
