The V.I. Department of Public Works (DPW) has implemented safety measures due to several damaged bridges on St. Croix. Recent inspections conducted by the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) revealed that 6 of 28 bridges on St. Croix are structurally deficient.
Effective immediately, large vehicles over five tons are prohibited from crossing until repairs have been completed. Additionally, the following actions have been implemented to address the impacted bridges:
The bridges below have been reduced to single lane traffic.
- Bridge on Route 7025 (Pond Bridge next to Fort Frederik)
- Bridge on Route 669 (Castle Burk Gut east of the Department of Agriculture)
- Bridge on Route 72 (Midland Road, Calquohoun Bridge)
The speed limit has been reduced to 20 mph while crossing on the bridges below. Detour signs and warning devices will be posted.
- Bridge on Route 70 (west of Superior Court)
- Bridge on Route 70 (west of UVI)
- Bridge on Route 64 (close to Paving Companies)
Starting Sept. 28, the Virgin Islands Police Department will be enforcing these safety measures. Public Works is urging motorists to comply with posted traffic signs and their directives.
